Upper Canada (Ontario today) was created by the British Constitutional Act of 1791, which separated the Province of Québec into Upper and Lower Canada. The St. Lawrence River divided the two colonies, Upper Canada situated along the "upper" section of the River, and Lower Canada farther "downstream". In 1841, the union of Upper and Lower Canada created the Province of Canada.
